Harnessing The Power Of 5G

Available in the UK since 2019, 5G technology offers distinct advantages to users, both business and personal. Now increasingly available throughout the world, it’s a realistic opportunity for organisations. This is especially true for businesses relying on internet technology and remote working for everyday operations.

What is 5G?

5G is the latest generation of internet connection. It hasn’t replaced 4G, however it offers far greater speed and capacity. Plus, it avoids the need for Wi-Fi connection when going online. Its greater connectivity and faster speed are good for downloading, transferring real-time information and enabling simultaneous users to be online reliably.

For example, mobile videos should be near instantaneous and glitch-free – even the HD ones. Video calls should become clearer and less erratic. Wearable fitness devices could monitor your health in real time, with the capability to report emergencies.

Phone networks say that it’s ten times – some claim 20 times – faster than 4G.

“Whatever we do now with our smartphones we’ll be able to do faster and better,” says Ian Fogg from OpenSignal, a mobile data analytics company. “Think of smart glasses featuring augmented reality, mobile virtual reality, much higher quality video, the internet of things making cities smarter. But what’s really exciting is all the new services that will be built that we can’t foresee.”

5G Benefits For Business

Leading ICT provider Ericsson states that 5G can transform business operations via the capability to:

  • Run any process remotely, regardless of how critical it is.
  • Have real-time control of every business process.
  • Automate business operations.
  • Use computer resources where it makes sense, running applications on the edge where relevant.
  • Provide a fundamentally higher security level (compared with 4G).

This potential can be applied to business operations, offering distinct advantages:

1. Customer Experience. Reliable connectivity, especially in crowded places, offers customers (and employees) a better online experience.

2. Real-Time Reporting. This can involve communicating accurate stock levels or reporting faults instantaneously, for example.

3. Greater Automation. Connecting data from hardware, software and cloud technology with speed and reliability offers potential for the automation of processes, saving time and improving service.

4. Improved Engagement. Quality communication during online meetings, VOIP calls and when using immersive content (from surveys through to virtual reality).

5. Better Realism. If your business uses virtual reality or augmented reality technologies 5G offers a greater immersive experience, boosting engagement.

“5G provides tremendous speed and connectivity that offer huge business opportunities,” says Eric Hughes of EMH Technology. “It’s an exciting chance to rethink how we solve business challenges and optimise processes for an organisation, its teams and its customers.”
