It’s no surprise that cloud computing is huge, with 94% of businesses using this technology (Cloudwards, June 2022). Multicloud solutions are growing in popularity, adopted by 76% of organisations in Forrester Consulting’s 2022 research. Is this performance set to grow? What are the key drivers of multicloud’s impact?

Multicloud refers to an organisation’s use of multiple cloud computing and storage devices to achieve its cloud computing goals. This approach offers the flexibility to optimise performance, control costs and access the best cloud technologies available. Increasingly, it is becoming the next step for organisations already based in the cloud.

Forrester’s research involved 1,039 international application development and delivery professionals working at companies of 1,000 or more employees in a wide range of industry sectors. Key findings showed that:

  • Multicloud usage is forecast to grow to 81% by 2024.
  • 90% of participants say that multicloud is helping them achieve business goals.
  • 94% of large enterprises (5,000+ employees) use multicloud infrastructure.

The research also showed that only 64% of large enterprises said that multicloud was successful.

“There are clear advantages to multicloud solutions, especially the ability to create a bespoke solution that meets the requirements of the organisation,” says Eric Hughes of EMH Technology. “To reap the benefits of multicloud, it needs to be carefully managed with resources available for key operations such as automation and security. It’s also essential that the multicloud solution can scale up as the business grows.”

3 Multicloud Trends

1. Security is the critical determinant of success for any cloud strategy. The potential complexity of a multicloud solution is often the most significant challenge to cloud security.

2. Centralised cloud functions can help standardise the multicloud structure and processes. This requires careful support, involving actions such as:

  • standardising cloud services
  • creating operational policies
  • centralising security
  • addressing skills shortages

3. Automation was viewed as ‘important’ by 89% of IT professionals within the research. From ‘off the shelf’ solutions to bespoke applications, automation helps optimise costs and scale business operations.

“Multicloud offers exciting possibilities to organisations,” says Eric. “It’s important to see where opportunities and cost savings exist, then plan and deploy the best solution for your business. The potential benefits are exciting!”
